Gallery 3 (Building a Clock)

From idea to art – building Tenedor for the Harvard Square J.P. Licks Visiting Artist exhibit

I had collected this carbon fork from a bike store’s discard pile (it appears to have been damaged in a cycling mishap). I chose it for the clock that I was creating specifically for the J.P. Licks installation; the bright colors made me think about the lively experience of eating delicious ice cream. I looked through my pile of (cleaned up) gears to find the right parts for the clock face, and found this black and silver Shimano with an open center that could encircle and highlight the words PINARELLO.

To make it fit around the words, I had to mount the gear slightly off center and the existing holes did not align with the fork to serve as points of attachment.
Ever the recycler, I took a piece of metal I had reclaimed, and formed a custom bracket to mount it.

Next, I mounted the gear and I set about constructing the clock face

After I completed the clock, I decided to mount it on an angle which gave it additional visual appeal, adding a sense of motion reminiscent of the bicycle where it all began…

Next, it’s on to J.P. Licks to hang the art – and grab some (amazing!!) iced coffee.

Yes, I have been back since to enjoy the exhibit and — of course to have some of the best ice cream in town. (Though we’re having the equally amazing J.P. Licks coffee in this photo.)

Great coffee! (we did take off the masks)
